| These experiments can be done year round, regardless of climate. If you live in a cold area these experiments can be done outdoors with an ideal operating temperature between -5 Celsius and -15 Celsius. Otherwise use the freezer compartment in your refrigerator.
PETRI DISH: The glass (not plastic) petri dish is the easiest introduction to ice properties because you can take the petri dish directly from the freezer to light table to begin your observations. Experiment with different types of water - distilled, tap, etc.. |

| 1. Use a petri dish made of glass, place some water in the dish and place in a freezer. If the water level is too high you will not be able to see the color - instead you will see the textures of the frozen ice but it will be whitish in color Experiment with the amount of water in the petri dish. | |||||||||

| 2. The ice formed in petri dish can be vewed directly as soon as it is removed from the freezer. | |||||||||
| 3. Place a polarizer sheet on the light table then place the frozen petri dish on top of the polarizer sheet. Now place a second polarizer sheet on top of the petri dish. | |||||||||
