Example of Dr. Hiromi Shimizu in Antarctica
VISUAL LAYERING PROCEDURE:
  1. Brush off vertical surface of snow to produce uniform surface
  2. Lightly spray vertical surface with a mist of ink or colored liquid
  3. Lightly spray to enhance contrast and crystal structure ( this is a trial and error process)
  4. Identify layers
LAYER IDENTIFICATION:
  1. Hard / Ice layers versus soft / unconsolidated layers
  2. Depth hoar - look for cup crystals at bottom of snow pack or under ice layers
  3. Surface layer - melt freeze metamorphism, atmospheric, rain or sun influence
  4. Equitemperture metamorphism between two ice layers
  5. Creep - one layer sliding over another layer within snowpack
  6. Chucks - roller, sastrugi or avalanche debris within snowpack
